Kirill Kondrashin is one of the few Russian conductors who achieved an international career, alongside Eugen Mravinsky, Igor Markewisch and Jascha Horenstein. In 1943 he conducts himself at the Bolshoi Theatre to the top of this house so important for Soviet musical life, to which he will belong for 13 years. In 1956, he climbed the desk of the Moscow Philharmonic as chief conductor. His position now also opens its doors internationally and Kondrashin can also accept tour invitations from Western abroad.
One of the milestones of his career is sure to be the first international Tchaikovsky piano competition held in Moscow in 1958. Kondrashin conducts the competition concert of American pianist Van Cliburn, who not only takes home the victory, but also "his" conductor, with whom he completes a triumphant tour. Kondrashin is the first Russian conductor to perform in the United States during the Cold War and in the nation-understanding return, the Russian audience falls in love with the 23-year-old American Van Cliburn, who henceforth operates in the Soviet Union under the nickname "Vanyushka".
In addition to Van Cliburn, whose Tchaikovsky concert is one of the discographic highlights of this 10 CD box, Russian companions such as Mstislav Rostropovich, Sviatoslav Richter and David Oistrakh are also represented with outstanding recordings. Kondrashin combined a special friendship with Shostakovitch, for whose works he committed himself in a very special way.
