Inquiri x bvdub - A Life in Setting Suns (2024) [Hi-Res]

Like two rooms at an underground party - a multi-level blending of identities and sounds, not only between two artists, but also within them both, all fed by the same deep well of nostalgia for the feeling of what was - and, to those who were there, will always be - the greatest decade of belonging and magic that electronic music culture will probably ever see. Inquiri and bvdub, both products of that golden era, have forever been equally ardent proponents of the magic and memory of those times and spaces, each living their own separated by only a few years and US states - but, as their friendship would later reveal, they might as well have been joined at the hip from the very beginning.

Upon having recently finished their “ambient” epic Destroyesterday., one of many discussions of their inability to let go of the past saw Lacey send Brock what she felt was the ‘90s personified - the “trance” of those times built on hypnotism and emotion - not drum rolls and tight shirts - to which he both suggested she sing her own lyrics, and requested it “destroy” anything he could make… perhaps in an unconscious nod to the opus they had recently completed. Her half reflecting her storied history in raves’ main rooms, where Inquiri was born, the towering, arpeggiated tales that left people crying on the dancefloor while they forget all that made them hurt. The proverbial door was then left open to the morning, where bvdub saw life and lived for the entirety of Brock’s rave existence as an early morning deep and ambient house DJ until his sudden exodus a decade and a half after it began. His was the world of slowly approaching sunsets, soft light filtering through hastily blacked out windows, and those who stayed until the end. For the reasons only they knew.

Two sides to the same story - as much leading to one another as doors between the main and back rooms, as sounds unconsciously bleeding over each other in a harmonious cacophony only those times - and that moment passing between two rooms - could bring.

Of a time in dreams of another life.
