Azerbaijani classical music occupies an honorable place in the world of oriental music. It is a testament to the cultural exuberance that reigned in the Middle East, the Caucasus and Central Asia since the 10th century. The mugham, or classical song, is a prime example of this cultural symbiosis, combining Turkish and Azerbaijani with a noticeable Persian influence in musical expression. In the 17th century, the Turkization of Azerbaijan began in earnest when nomadic Shi'ite tribes arrived in the region and the Safavids established a new state based on Shi'ism. After the decline of the Safavids and the control of the Qajar dynasty, the Turkish language established itself in Azerbaijan. In the 19th century, part of the Russian Empire, Azerbaijani music reached its peak of development, with the emergence of conservatories, theaters, and prominent figures in the artistic world. The mugham repertoire and its modal system were formed during this period. Azerbaijanis living in southern Iran were unaware of this development due to the authoritarian nature of Persian culture. Today, Azerbaijani music continues to epitomize the beauty, expression and historical significance of the musical cultures of this region.
