“I’m heading for the future with African heritage”. Montreal-based singer-songwriter Djely Tapa descends from a long line of griots from Mali. She won the 2020 JUNO Award for “World Music Album of the Year” (Canada) with her debut album, Barokan (produced by AfrotroniX), in which Mandinka traditions and desert blues billow pleasingly beneath a fascinating synthetic breeze. She has been hailed as one of the new global voices of Mandinka music.
