This 2001 recording brings together two generations of British jazz talent, the veteran reedsman Tony Coe and the youthful trumpeter Gerard Presencer, plus backing from the ever-reliable Brian Lemon on piano and Dave Green on bass. It's an intimate affair - just four world class musicians, each a master of the jazz art with a unique style and personality, performing a selection of classic jazz standards composed by George Gershwin.
Tony Coe, who is now in his 70s has worked in a prodigious variety of settings from the mainstream jazz band of Humphrey Lyttelton in the 1950s to free improv with Derek Bailey, and even providing the original tenor sax performance on Henry Mancini's celebrated 'Pink Panther' theme.
Gerard Presencer was only 28 when he recorded this set. The sheer dazzle of his playing can be thrilling, though today his efforts are more concentrated on education, holding teaching posts at both the Royal Academy and the Berlin Hochschule.
Personnel:
Tony Coe - (tenor & soprano saxophone, clarinet), Gerard Presencer - (flugelhorn), Brian Lemon - (piano), Dave Green - (bass)
