ANNA deploys a pop that combines, like few people on this side of the Atlantic, modesty and ambition, lush sound architectures and tightrope structures, catchy melodies and a weird patina of the most beautiful effect.
Led by Martin Vidy, ANNA has known multiple versions, but has been able to show in ten years and four albums, that it is still possible to unearth treasures in indie pop and guitar rock, provided that we dig a little alongside the others.
With "The Fun", the group writes a new stage of its creative journey, at its own pace and in an unusual approach that borders on the punk gesture in the world of 2024.
Recorded as a group, this fifth album carries its playful side on its shoulder and produces in the process some timeless classics, playful and full of surprises with touching psychedelia.
60s technicolor pop, 80s new wave and synth rock, garage energy and slacker relaxation, ANNA strolls on her new album, thwarting the obsession with citation thanks to a form of nonchalance and a very personal writing supported by the timbre of Martin Vidy.
Starting off with a bang with "Names", ANNA sets the record straight with this absolutely catchy and infectious melody that calls on brass and electric guitars to create an extraordinary mini-symphony. The band comes very close to the extravagance of Deerhoof with notably "Isolated", a bit synthetic and somewhat glam, as well as the psychedelic and exotic "Concrete", proving that they are never stingy with ideas, knowing how to combine weirdness and efficiency.
Cleverly blurring the lines between bedroom pop and studio professionalism, bold technicolor pop with rich arrangements and indie rock with sharp guitars, ANNA continues to shake up the codes in order to provoke ecstasy. As proof, we have the sweet and delicate moments like "Cinema" and "Quiet Loves" in the company of Margaux Bouchaudon of En Attendant Ana or other more lively ones such as the bouncy title track or the (let's say it) Britpop edges of "M.O.A.M." where the quartet makes their incredible alchemy and this ability to surprise their audience speak until the end with "Almost Fun". Playful, lively and versatile, The Fun will prove that ANNA remains one of the most fascinating bands of recent years.
