The Commodores brachten hun eerste single uit in 1969. Deze flopte jammerlijk en hun platencontract kreeg geen vervolg. Intens touren zorgde er echter voor dat de band een geoliede machine werd die zich in de kijker speelde bij Motown baas Berry Gordy. En zo bracht de band 5 jaar later alsnog hun debuutalbum Machine Gun uit. Het louter uit uptempo funktracks bestaande album werd direct een succes, mede doordat de band met 2 lead vocalisten werkten (Lionel Richie en Walter Orange). Vanaf het derde album scoorde RELEASE DATE de band hun eerste top 10 hits in Amerika, gevolgd door hun eerste wereldwijde nummer 1 hit ‘Three Times
