Clyde McPhatter was one of the greatest R&B and pop singers during the ‘50s and ‘60s, and a huge influence on the evolution of American music. During his heyday, his name and voice loomed so much larger than that of the group the Drifters, which he founded, that it took five years for them to recover from his departure. He is regarded as one of the top lead singers of all time and the second most popular black male vocalist of the ‘50s, behind Fats Domino. Clyde was a very strong influence on the soul era that followed his prominence in the music business. His remarkable high tenor influenced everyone from Jackie Wilson and Smokey Robinson to Aaron Neville. Also, Clyde was there during the very early days of rock ‘n’ roll and made significant contributions to building it into the commercial success that it became. This release compiles two of his complete Atlantic albums: Clyde (1959) and Rock & Roll (1956). These LPs contain some of his greatest studio recordings from the beginning of his career. In addition, we have included 5 bonus tracks from the same period. This CD edition is a rare find, filled with excellent R&B recordings that made McPhatter an international star during his heyday.
“Perhaps the most innovative of all R&B singers”- (Bill Millar - The History Of Rock)
“He was one of the first guys I ever listened to. When he first came on the scene [with Billy Ward and the Dominoes], he was The Man”- (Smokey Robinson, 1972)
“Anything Clyde sings is a prayer. When I was growing up, I don’t care what else was going on in the world, you could put on Clyde McPhatter and it would all disappear” - (Aaron Neville to Goldmine Magazine)
