The band, which started 45 years ago from the Scottish town of Dunfermline, still includes frontman Dan McCafferty and 67-year-old bassist Pete Agnew among the former founders. Guitarist Jimmy Murrison has been a member since 1994, and drummer Lee Agnew (the bassist's son) has been a member since 1999, the organizers said. Nazareth was not named after the biblical city, but after an American settlement that was featured in one of their early songs. The McCaffertys moved to London in 1970, their debut album (Nazareth - 1971) was released and was successful, and a year later they were already touring with Deep Purple. The record Razamanaz was released in 1973 with the help of Purple's bassist Roger Glover as a producer, which broke into the British charts and marked the beginning of the group's most successful era. The title track of Hair of the Dog, released in 1975, became a radio favorite, and Love Hurts, also featured on this record, is Nazareth's best-known ballad to date, which was on the charts for months in many countries around the world. The group's music was primarily defined by the scratchy, characterful voice of Dan McCafferty, as well as the hard, yet clean and light guitar playing.
The band has been active ever since, releasing an album or song from time to time. In 1981, the song Holiday became a hit, and in 1993 Guns N Roses also covered Hair of the Dog. After the release of the album Newz, released on Nazareth's 40th birthday in 2008, they toured Europe for almost a year.
