The band was formed in 1966 in San Antonio, Texas. The band was founded by Rod Prince and Roy Cox. They were later joined by Todd Potter and Danny Segovia. The name of the band was taken from "Centrifugal Bumble-Puppy" - a fictional game from the book "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. The band debuted as an opening act for The Who.
After several changes in the band's lineup, Rod Prince and Todd Potter played lead guitar, Roy Cox played bass, and David Fore played drums.
In 1967, the band moved to Austin, Texas, and signed a contract with the International Artists label.
In 1969, Bubble Puppy reached the Top 20 with the single "Hot Smoke & Sassafras". That same year, they recorded the album A Gathering of Promises. Despite the success of the single, the band experienced several conflicts with the label, and in 1970, Bubble Puppy and International Artists went their separate ways. The band moved to Los Angeles and changed their name to Demian, signing a contract with manager Nick St. Nicholas. In 1971, they recorded an album of the same name, but the album was unsuccessful, and put the band in a difficult financial situation. As a result, the band broke up in 1972.
