This is a collection on 2 CDs of four vocal or choral works by Gustav Holst that we rarely get a chance to hear, either live or on broadcasts. They comprise The Hymn of Jesus (London Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Charles Groves), the Choral Symphony (sung and played by the London Philharmonic Choir and Orchestra with Felicity Palmer as soprano soloist and conducted by Sir Adrian Boult; this was written for the Leeds Festival of 1925, a decade or so after The Planets was composed. The Hymn of Jesus is based on the Apocryphal Gospels and Holst was able to work from the original Greek texts.

The second CD has a chamber opera, The Wandering Scholar, that I had only heard of before but never heard, with Michael Rippon, Norma Burrows, Michael Langdon and Robert Tear as soloists, and the English Chamber Orchestra; and a cantata (or 'musical interlude' as Holst calls it) - At the Boar's Head - with another four fine soloists backed by the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and Choir. The cantata is based on a libretto taken from Shakespeare's Henry IV.

These are excellent performances on 2 CDs of over 70 min each so they represent good value as well as providing us with some rarely heard works alongside the more popular Hymn of Jesus.
