Gary U.S. Bonds is a talented R&B singer/songwriter, the architect of the raucous, echo-laden “Norfolk Sound”, and one of the dance-craze era’s biggest artists. He left an indelible mark on the first generation of rock and soul aficionados with smash hits like “New Orleans”, “School Is Out”, and “Quarter to Three”. His music combined rock-combo raunch with impassioned, scorched soulsinging, backed by joyous horns and vocal chants that sounded like a rocked-up revival meeting. Both Bruce Springsteen and Steven Van Zandt were greatly influenced by Bonds’ music. A chance meeting between these three artists in the late seventies, led to friendship and, shortly after, an outstanding musical collaboration.
This release includes Gary U.S. Bonds’ two first LPs in their entirety: Dance ‘Til Quarter to Three (1960) and Twist Up Calypso (1962). Both albums were originally issued by the Legrand label, and have been remastered and packaged together in this very special collector’s edition, which also includes 7 bonus tracks, consisting of hard to find sides from the same period. These fabulous recordings offer a solid introduction into this man's specialbrand of soul, and contain some of the best R&B and rock & roll of the era.
“One of the premier party singers of all time.” - New York Times
"There’s nothing quite like the U.S. Bonds sound for dancing feet and for sheer excitement on a record.” - Dick Clark
