Fascinatingly harmonious sounds being established beyond the common tone orders are the speciality of California-based German composer Wolfgang von Schweinitz (*1956). After his highly acclaimed recording of “Plainsound Glissando Modulation” for violin and double bass (NEOS 10812, German Music Critics’ Award 3/2009) Frank Reinecke – one of today’s foremost double bass virtuosos – has now dedicated himself to another cornerstone of recent music history: “Plainsound Counterpoint” for solo double bass from 2010–2011. In these seven breathtakingly beautiful concert studies according to dedicatee Reinecke a to date unseen wealth of harmonic and melodic intervals unfolds along the plain harmonic series.
A second program item of this CD consists in the double bass solo work “Mirror” by American composer Catherine Lamb (b. 1982), who today lives in Berlin. Her composition “celebrates the different tone colours of two-part-sounds in just intonation, with all its synergetic meldings and rotating beats” (Reinecke).
