Oxford-based Anglo-French artist Julia-Sophie unpacks the stress and struggles of relationships on her debut solo album, singing over squelchy analog synths and dusty beatbox rhythms.
Best known as one half of Little Fish, the short-lived alt-rock band that released a single album on Motown in 2010, Julia-Sophie credits the experience of Stateside fame with informing her current direction. Her brush with LA life and her bizarre run of experiences left her with a sour taste in her mouth, so she returned home to Oxford to rediscover herself, immersing herself in the local DIY scene. And after a spell writing lo-fi pop in her home studio, she began to record with a friend using their arsenal of vintage synths and drum machines.
'forgive too slow' is the result of years of R&D, an album of confident, sugar-sweet pop that's darker than it lets on. Julie-Sophie reminisces about precarious, self-harming relationships and tense situations, expressing herself over skittering, club-aware productions that come off like a contemporary answer to classic electro-pop. 'better' is a footwork speed, tom-heavy ice blast that's carried by her slow annunciations, and 'comfort you' is a giddy roll of kicks and Mellotron-like flutes that's subtly sadder than it sounds.
