Australian improvising saxophonist Scott McConnachie, guitarist Carl Dewhurst and drummer Simon Barker come together to celebrate the release of their new album Rock Dog on Earshift Music.
Having performed in numerous formations, this album documents the first moments of this cross-generational line-up between three of Australia’s most forward-thinking improvisers.
The music spans intense, visceral spontaneity and interaction in texturally dynamic improvised forms. Unrehearsed and undiscussed, this is improvised music at its best, highlighting the musical simpatico of these three unique voices.
McConnachie says of playing with Barker and Dewhurst: “They both exude pure joy in their music and there is a huge fun factor in playing with the two of them. Carl's guitar sound is incredible. He can get so much grit and detail happening at both low and high volumes. That's hard to do. Simon's level of relaxation behind the drums is phenomenal. He can stretch time feel like nobody else.”
Sharing a keen interest in links between physicality and improvisation, the trio’s music is interactive and lively. Barker and Dewhurst’s passion for long distance running serves their sense of rhythm and pace, whilst McConnachie’s martial arts practice has allowed him facility and dynamism. McConnachie says “the awareness of core and breathing are influential in the way we play our instruments and approach music and improvising.”
McConnachie is regarded as one of Australia’s most exciting improvising saxophonists. He has toured throughout Australia and Japan, and performed with Australian jazz luminaries Barney McAll, Andrea Keller and Paul Grabowsky. As an improviser he has become a new authority on the saxophone, quickly becoming part of groups led by firebrands Scott Tinkler, Erkki Veltheim and many others.
“When talking about Scott you run the risk of hyperbolic overload. I simply can’t name any player with more technique, creativity, power, imagination and beauty than Scott. Playing with him has been a highlight of my musical life and listening to him is a constant joy.” Scott Tinkler
