Radomir Eliška (1931-)
Principal guest conductor of the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra. He studied under Janáček's disciple Břecislav Bakala at the Brno Music Academy in the Czech Republic. From 1969 to 1990, he served as the principal conductor and music director of the prestigious Czech orchestra, the Karlovy Vary Symphony Orchestra. He frequently guest-performed with the Czech Philharmonic and the Prague Symphony Orchestra, but because his activities were mainly in the Czech Republic, his name was not well known in Japan until recently. In 2006, he made his debut at the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra's regular concert, where he gave a legendary performance, and in 2008 he became the orchestra's first principal guest conductor. His live recordings with the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra have been highly praised. He has also performed with the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Metropolitan Symphony Orchestra, Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra, Osaka Philharmonic Orchestra, Kyushu Symphony Orchestra, and others, and is attracting a lot of attention as a "late-arriving master." He served as president of the Czech Dvorak Society from 2001 to June 2013.

Sapporo Symphony Orchestra
The Sapporo Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1961 under the name of "Sapporo Civic Symphony Orchestra", and in 1962 it became the "Sapporo Symphony Orchestra Foundation", and in 2009 it became the first orchestra to be incorporated as a public interest foundation. It is the only professional orchestra in Hokkaido, which has a population of over 5.4 million people in an area of 83,457 square kilometers, 22% of the country's land area, and is affectionately known as "Sakkyo". Based at the Sapporo Concert Hall Kitara, known for its excellent acoustics, the orchestra has been widely known as an orchestra worthy of the majestic Hokkaido for its transparent sound and powerful expressiveness. Past conductors include Masao Aratani, Peter Schwarz, Hiroyuki Iwaki, Kazuyoshi Akiyama, and Tadaaki Odaka. Odaka served as principal conductor from 1981 to 1986, music advisor/permanent conductor from 1998, and music director from 2004 to March 2015. In April 2015, Max Pommer became the Principal Conductor, and the orchestra performed a wide range of works from Bach to contemporary music, and their live recordings were highly praised. Radomir Eliška has been the Principal Guest Conductor since 2008, and the Honorary Conductor since 2015, and his collaboration with the Sapporo Symphony Orchestra has been highly praised. In addition to his specialty, Czech music, the recordings have also included symphonies by Brahms and Tchaikovsky. The Sapporo Symphony Orchestra has performed overseas in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Southeast Asia, Korea, and Taiwan, and has been well received in each of these countries. The current Principal Conductor Pommer will retire in March 2018, and Matthias Bamert is set to take over as his successor.
