Robert Sheff's eccentric second solo album - originally released on tape in 1981 and never before reissued - is finally back, remastered by Stephan Mathieu. This one's a trip - a collection of wildly experimental studies made with tape, electronics, field recordings and various instruments.
US avant-garde great Sheff is best known for his litany of collaborations (with Laurie Anderson, Robert Ashley and Iggy Pop to name just a few) and his Lovely Music material, such as his influential but under-heard chamber music classic 'Out of the Blue', that was re-issued by Unseen Worlds' for its 40th anniversary five years ago. Now the label has followed it up with its odder sequel, a buzz of environmental recordings and ramshackle ideas that Sheff forms into a puzzling narrative - just check the extensive liner notes if you need proof.
There's plenty going on here to sink yr teeth into; Sheff's sense of humor is palpable throughout but he interrupts his zaniness with sobering truths. Buried in the thick fog of exotica references and synth experiments are snippets from historical events, like a recording of the police violence that followed the verdict of a seven year sentence for Harvey Milk and mayor George Moscone's murder on 'The White Night Riot'.
