In the world of progressive rock, it's not often that a band returns after a long hiatus with a fresh offering that's both nostalgic and comforting. Dutch progressive rock band ICE did just that, releasing their second album, after "the Saga", which was released in... 2005.

Already beginning the whole title track sets the bar high with its vocal layer. The powerful voice of the lead singer (Hein Van Den Broek) is a mixture of expressiveness and emotion that immediately catches the listener's attention. In the background, voices from the intercom are heard accompanying the preparation for the start of the space flight. The lyrics, often introspective and poetic, are very sincere, which gives the music depth. Each track gives the impression of a story being told, and the vocals lead the narrative in a way that is both fascinating and immersive.

One of the distinguishing features of this album is the excellent work of the guitarist (Chris Van Hoogdalem). From intricate solos that glide with precision, to rhythmic sections that support each track with a solid foundation, the guitar's performance is simply spectacular. The use of both electric and acoustic guitars adds dynamics to the album, providing a rich tapestry of sounds that keeps the listener engaged from start to finish.

Complementing the strong vocals and guitar work are expressive keys that add a layer of sophistication and complexity to ICE's music. Ardie Westdijk's ability to seamlessly blend classic influences with modern progressive elements is evident throughout the album. Whether lush, atmospheric soundscapes or intricate, fast-paced passages, the keys play a key role in shaping the overall climate of the album. In particular, the interaction between keyboards and guitars is the culmination demonstrating the cohesion of the band and musical synergy, which is further enhanced by the sensational rhythm section: René Sterk (bass guitar) - Rob Boshuijzen (drums and percussion).

Released by Oskar Records, ICE's new album feels like a tribute to the great progressive rock stars. Fans of Camel, Pendragon, Chandelier or Kayak will find a lot to love here. The album's structure, with extensive instrumental sections and complex time signatures, is reminiscent of these legendary bands. But ICE also brings its own unique touch, ensuring that while there are familiar elements to each track, the music on "Man In the Moon" is fresh and original. The band's ability to balance tradition with innovation is one of the album's most impressive achievements.
