The Angels - Cry Baby Cry (2023) Hi-Res

This single was released in 1962 by The Angels (Vinyl, 7", 45 RPM, Single), a female pop vocal group from Orange, New Jersey, symbolizing the girl group boom of the 1960s, on the APRICE label. It reached a peak of 38th place on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

This melancholic ballad, a follow-up to their previous hit "Til," is accompanied by an orchestra conducted by Hutch Davey, and is a teen pop/girl pop classic with beautiful harmonies and delicate choruses. Compared to their later SMASH label days, this is an early masterpiece with a pure and calm atmosphere.

A girl pop group. The group's predecessor was the group The Starlets, formed in Orange, New Jersey in 1961. Early members included Bernadette Carroll (who had a hit with "Party Girl" in 1963). They soon changed their name to The Angels and signed with the CAPRICE label. Their debut album "Til" became a national hit in 1961, followed by "Cry Baby Cry". In 1963, they moved to the SMASH label, and with the help of the production team Feldman-Goldstein-Gottehrer (commonly known as FGG), they changed their style to rock and roll for teenagers. After their big hit "My Boyfriends Back", they had a string of hits such as "I Adore Him", "Thank You and Goodnight" and "Wow Wow Wee (He's The Boy For Me)", and quickly grew into one of the leading girl groups of the early 60s. After 1964, with a change in line-up, they recorded on the CONGRESS and RCA VICTOR labels, and also under the name The Halos. The group broke up in 1968, but reformed in 1974 and recorded on the POLYDOR label.
