JoosTVD's great musical adventure book is now, if I have counted correctly, in volume 18. And once again I continue to be amazed by the fact that JoosTVD is not yet a big name in our own country or abroad.
Joost van Dinther, also known as The Vanished Dutchman, once again shows that we are dealing with a very unique artist, who does not deny his influences but integrates them into his own unique style.
In the opening song of his new album, City Of The Pretty, JoosTVD sounds like the Dutch Isaac Hayes, or, as you like, Barry White. Funky symphonic soul with a unique screeching synthesizer.
In Join The Line-Up, JoosTVD goes back on his well-known slow swinging tour, sounding like Todd Rundgren, who has gone on a Latin tour. Go With U is a languid funky pop song in which languid Michael Franks-like vocals are mixed with the tropical Kid Creole style.
The lazily driving and jazzy grooving City Of The Mirrorballs betrays influences such as Steely Dan and Michael Franks. Waiting For has an intimate, Dance Away (Roxy Music)-like, tapping rhythm box in an atmospherically floating ballad, which is wrapped in a warm synthesizer blanket.
Legends follows after the cheerfully hopping jazzy groover The Urge. A crazy fair-like instrumental with a stubborn sound, occasionally reminiscent of Zappa.
Order your Pina Colada in advance while you sway along to the tropical lazy groover The Kind Of Fool I've Been. JoosTVD sounds here like Tony Joe White who also ventures into Latin. Celebe is a very fragile music box-like melody in which influences from vaudeville and smoky jazz can be found.
A Set Of Delight Knobs is an angular bouncing funky song that is followed by the “almost samba” of the languid Sandals In The Sand. The hip-swaying groover Can't Own What Fades Away closes the album.
I'll just try again. JoosTVD deserves to become big. In the meantime, I'm having a great time with this new edition of the Great Musical Adventure Book by JoosTVD!
