Inspired by the 2022 Iranian uprising, this three-movement suite celebrates the persistence of hope in the face of tyranny. Iranian-Australian composer Puya Mehman Pazir has based the work on a well-known Kurdish lullaby that, as he explains, ‘echoes through the memories of an entire nation.’
The first movement, Lullaby, is an ode to calmness and serenity, enveloping the listener in the gentle embrace of the lullaby. That peace is shattered in the second movement, Incident, where the motifs from the first movement return transformed into harsh, dissonant sounds that evoke the death of 22-year-old Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini, who died in police custody after being arrested for not wearing her veil correctly.
The final movement, Awakening, weaves together motifs and melodies from the diverse ethnic groups of Iran – Kurds, Lors, Baluchs and others, each bringing their unique voices to a collective outcry against oppression. Despite the somber end, which reflects the brutal suppression of their uprising, a subtle connection to the initial lullaby motif hints at the enduring cycle of life and struggle: a reminder, says Puya, ‘that even in the face of tyranny, hope persists, and the fight for freedom continues.’
The cover photo is part of a body of work made by Hoda Afshar, in response to the death of Mahsa Amini. The women in the photographs are, like Afshar, Iranian Australians who have watched the protests unfold from afar. Dressed in black, they cluster together and braid each other's hair. This, says Afshar, is ‘a direct allusion to the images on social media of women in Iran defiantly discarding the veil, and also to a practice common among Kurdish female fighters who plait each other's hair before heading into battle against the Islamic State. With their faces mostly hidden from view and their backs turned, they are surrogates for their brave sisters in Iran. The twines of a plait are referred to as pichesh-e-moo in Farsi, meaning the turn or fold of the hair. A revolution is a turning point, but it is never without loss.’
