When Dave Miller and Mark Tomorsky stand together with harmonica and guitar in hand to deliver the first notes of the song Ghost On A Roll, something amazing happens. The band's rhythm section anchored by Tommy Miller on bass and Frank Charboneaux on drums, builds in the background including a soulful organ sound from Bob Ramsey - and then singer Al Jacquez captures listeners with the haunting story of a man who is down on his luck and ends up on the street. When the song is over, listeners realize that but for the grace of god, the song could be about them - and - that this is a band with a depth of conviction and the ability to convey their musical ideas in a way that touches the emotions. The new Miller Brothers Band CD includes songs that tackle a variety of topics - including Alabama Key's story about a big city car thief - "Boostin' speedwagons was his game for sure, break in, hot wire, he's gone in four" to the challenge of scratching out a living in the new millenium on Wolf at Your Door. When you least expect it - the band turns on a dime and offers up a moving rendition of unrequited love on Stand To Lose - "Without your love, I stand to lose" The band's songs are alternately and intrinsically bluesy, soulful and driving, never predictable.
Each song takes the listener on a ride through a new story - a multitude of views on life, love and working for a living - with an interesting balance of musical power, emotion and at times, gritty reality. (We won't spoil the musical path down which the song Things Will Get Better will take you. Be sure to put on your favorite headphones for this one...)
The band's unique mixture of emotion, raw bluesy substance and unmistakable energy makes the listener want to come back to experience each song again and again. Oh, by the way, if you're looking for a musical comparison, that's a tough call. The band's influences are many; however, the overall sound is truly the Miller Brothers Band. They're tricky, these guys - just when you think you know what's coming, they throw a musical jab at you out of nowhere.
