Marty Stokes was raised in a Military family, travelling the world as a kid, and learnin’ the ropes in R&B bands at the age of 14. Entertaining in teen clubs overseas, he would sneak into the real clubs late at night, playing Cream, Steppenwolf, Hendrix, Spirit, Buffalo Springfield, and a little later the likes of Johnny Winter. He was developing a playing style of his own at a young age, which you will realize when listening to his first CD release entitled, HEAR YOU CALLIN'. The masterful engineering of John Mclane has successfully brought out what Stokes most desired to express for his listeners. He is joined vocally by Summer Kilgore, adding a unique quality to the total sound. She sends a shiver up your spine on the duet arrangement STOP, as well as delivering a sultry twist with her lead on CAN’T LET GO, formerly covered by Lucinda Williams. A tasteful rearrangement of BB King’s THE THRILL IS GONE, is covered vocally by a raspy Lisa George, regularly performing with the Band. The virtuoso piano of John Mclane, wailin’ sax of Harry Drew, and blistering guitar of Marty Stokes, equals a rendition BB can be proud of. Stokes holds nothing back in his playing, ripping out raw and melodic lead and slide guitar patterns for International audiences hearing his originals for the first time. From the S.R. Vaughan HOUSE IS A ROCKIN', to Junior Wells' LITTLE BY LITTLE, the slide is mean and the flavor hot. Stokes writes his own music and lyrics, and tears at the insides with HEARTBREAK SCHOOL. There's a 'mean-town-blues' quality in WAIT FOR ME BABY, warped humour in GOTTA GET TO WORK ON THE THING, and plenty of groove in HINDSITE, as well as some anxiety in ON MY OWN. Currently heading up the Captiva Band, Stokes performs largely in the place of his roots—where his parents were born and raised, and later his own children. Within his local heritage there are wonderful stories of the Islands, one of which is expressed in the original, CAPTIVA BONE, where he is joined by guitarist Donavan Christenson. A great Blues studio album is hard to find these days---treat yourself to HEAR YOU CALLIN’ and you certainly won’t be disappointed! The reviews of surprised listeners in yet the early stages of release, is beyond what Stokes expected. However, according to musical friends and followers, this first release could simply be scratching the surface of what’s yet to come. This one should be in your collection-don't forget to TURN IT UP!
