Lulled by Pacific coast's rhythms and Andean melodies, Helena RECALDE - bassist, double bassist and Ecuadorian singer - composes and writes a music loaded with emotion, her experiences and stories from her home country.
She surrounds herself with eclectic and talented musicians to colour her compositions with jazz and improvisation.
Her work gives us a mixed music; from jazz to Afro-latin rhythms to take us on a trip to the top of the Andes.
Her texts evoke the Cordillera’s valleys, the mother who cares, the nostalgia of childhood, the joy of simple things, all of which played on Latin American melodies with the energy that characterizes this musician who leads her band through her groovy bass lines.
Her new disc “Karishina” is an album in which Helena and her musicians alternately perform original compositions, a traditional South American song “No Valentin” and a theme from the jazz repertoire “Afro Blue”. Within this musical universe, the melancholy of Andean melodies mixes with the piquant joy of Afro Pacific rhythms, passing through jazz tones and giddy improvisations, all embellished with textures of nature and committed titles. Karishina means -woman unfit for chores-. It is an insult, a mockery only addressed to women.
