Emil Brandqvist - Interludes (2024) [Hi-Res]

Emil Brandqvist has now firmly established himself among the elite of European jazz musicians. The drummer from Gothenburg has caused a sensation, especially with his trio together with pianist Tuomas A. Turunen and bassist Max Thornberg. The trio was recently honored for 50 million worldwide streams of their music and the last album "Layers Of Life" rose to No. 2 in the German jazz charts.

But to reduce Emil Brandqvist to his role as bandleader and musician is not enough. It is above all the composer Emil Brandqvist who has made the Swede's popularity grow. With "Interludes", he now offers his own compositions in a variety of instrumentations, whereby this collection of pieces brings together a total of nine works that were already available exclusively digitally as the song cycle "Three Songs Part 1 - 3". Composed over the last four years, we hear instruments such as lap steel guitar, pump organ, bass clarinet, violin, voices and keyboard fiddle. Emil Brandqvist himself plays drums and percussion as well as piano and rhodes on the album, but also appears on some tracks as a composer. The overall mood of the album is very calm and a wonderful journey into the thoughtful silence of the north.

Tracks such as "Poem Of The Sea", "Waiting For The Rain" and "Sleep" point the way and the album also contains a digital hit with "Lilac", as the song has now been streamed over four million times. Finally, two new pieces recorded especially for "Interludes", "The Living Room Conductor" and "The Living Room Gymnast", see the Emil Brandqvist Trio reunited; together with Tuomas A. Turunen and Max Thornberg as well as Martin Brandqvist on horns, the drummer devotes himself to Nordic soundscapes in the most intimate form. It is also worth mentioning that the album is a true family project, because in addition to his wife Nina Ewald and brother Martin Brandqvist, who contributes various wind instruments, father Hakan Brandqvist closes the album on the organ in the track "Honeysuckle". Emil's second brother Jakob Brandqvist contributed the artwork.

As with the last trio albums, Ake Linton, who already has excellent references from his work for E.S.T., was of course responsible for the sound engineering.
