Irish Saxophonist and Rapper Adam Nolan (17 albums) first came into contact with Bassist and Guitarist Brian Kastan (60 albums) after releasing his critically acclaimed album "Prim and Primal" in 2021.
It was American writer Dick Metcalf from Contemporary Fusion Reviews articles who wrote how he'd love to hear the two musicians play together. Since then the two have been conversing ideas, and in August 2023, the two came together to record in New York at Brian's Photography Gallery and Recording Studio in Hudson Valley.
Looking for a Drummer with a wild energy, technique and a free jazz root, Brian suggested hot on the NYC free jazz scene James Paul Nadien to the group. He fit perfectly.
Nolans style has evolved dramatically compared to his previous album, "Gods Planet." More aggressive and impactful. Now to a more Kauro Abe and Marshall Allen vibe. Once mentioned before at a Jazzahead conference, "Ornette Coleman on Steroids." More free.
Brian brings Rage Against the Machine meets Free Jazz Punk vibes, and it works so beautifully. Each musician is out in the open, in separate directions, yet still aware of each other's influence on each other. One of Nolans concepts suggested before a take.
The album title "ARE U FREE" brings about a philosophy that Nolan remains to keep. Searching for new ways to express freedom of creativity in the moment and to diminish restrictions and blocks in order to find a way to become freer than the saxophone allows.
This album is a new level of freedom fit for the chaotic world we are living in in the present day. An overall expression of freedom by fighting back rather than detaching. Drilling the question to everyone "Are you free?"
