Denise Jannah's turn to smooth jazz in this 1997 Blue Note CD (released exclusively in Europe) is puzzling. The rhythm section of keyboardist Koen van Baal, electric bassist Marc van Wageningen and drummer Rene Creemers seems to unnecessarily hold back this talented singer. The old standard "You Go to My Head" is the biggest disappointment, with its lackluster chart by Willem Friede. There are some enjoyable tracks. Her treatment of John Hiatt's "Have a Little Faith in Me" features Jannah backed solely by the tasty acoustic guitar of Leonardo Amuedo. The extraordinary pianist Bert van den Brink provides her initial support for the timeless ballad "You Must Believe in Spring";" he's also on hand for a wild take of Chick Corea's "High Wire," and plays organ on an unusual interpretation of "All Blues." Among Jannah's several original compositions, one especially stands out, the low key ballad "I'll Always be Here." This isn't a bad CD, it's just that Jannah's earlier fans may take some time to warm to her temporary switch in direction. © Ken Dryden
