Contemporary sounds that blend with tradition, exploring new territories thanks to the use of electronics and synthesizers. It is no coincidence that Nicola Di Tommaso's new album, out on 8 March for Filibusta Records (IRD physical distribution), is entitled Learn something new: a work that amazes for its coherence and jazz awareness thanks to original compositions which, leaving ample space for interpretations and stylistic contaminations, they are rooted in the strength and stability of great jazz.
The musicians who took part in this adventure are among the leading names of the new Italian scene, distinguished by style, technical ability and originality: Vittorio Solimene, on hammond organ and synth, Matteo Bultrini on drums and the well-established guru Luca Spagnoletti to electronics.
The album, composed almost entirely of original songs, is divided into two parts. The first in hammond trio, which starts from the idea of the great formations of this type, such as those of Jimmy Smith and Wes Montgomery, Dr. Lonnie Smith and Jonathan Kreisberg, Peter Bernstein and Larry Golding, contextualizing the sound in our era.
The second leaves room for synth, fender roads and keyboards and this is precisely the moment in which the band explores more contemporary territories contaminated by other music and this is demonstrated by the presence of electronic music, totally free compared to the rest of the group.
Even the sound of the guitar changes depending on the lineup and in the first version it is linked to the tradition of jazz guitar while in the second case it is closer to the most recent transformations. Overall, the quartet's music approaches contemporary American jazz and, without forgetting its origins, follows its most recent transformations, adding a European flavor.
In the songs there is an alternation of thematic lyricism and more complex atmospheres, in which various musical styles coexist. Improvisation, nourished by the skilful interplay between the musicians, remains the characterizing and predominant element, completing the group's sound.
