The two great musicians were connected by their love of swing and big band music. The album Swing Fever, on which the couple plays accompanied by Jools Holland & His Rhythm & Blues Orchestra, was released on February 23 and represents their own take on classic big band numbers such as Lullaby Of Broadway, Oh Marie, Pennies From Heaven and others.
Jools: It was just before Christmas, three years ago, when my phone rang at home. I didn't know Rod that well back then, but he just said that he would really like to record a record with my band. I replied: Well, I'll have to think about it. And after a second I added: yes, that would be great! When do you want to start?..
You know, if you have a big band, it's really a dream to have a great singer. But to have one of the greatest singers in the world who has a natural feel for this music? You can't ask for anything more.
Quickly recognizing a kindred spirit, Holland agreed, and the pair recorded Swing Fever, a record soaked in jump blues, boogie-woogie and swing rhythm and blues.
Rod: You know, I recorded a great the Great American Songbook, which sold extremely well. And this album was the next step. There are no slow songs on this record, and in this it is not like the Great American Songbook. But I was comfortable with this music, from the performance of which I received great joy and pleasure.
In form, Swing Fever is not far removed from Stewart's albums from the Great American Songbook, which used songs written before the advent of rock and roll. But if on the albums of the Great American Songbook Rod often seemed a little mannered, and sometimes even boring, here he sings with an obvious smile, with a cheerful sound combined with Holland's piano and the noisy rhythms of his orchestra. The album shows a tangible sense of joy that comes from musicians working in the studio live: they enjoy their collaboration, and it is difficult for the listener not to succumb to this excitement with them.
