Here we have the start of an exciting mini series from The King's Consort, recording highlights of the sacred music of Claudio Monteverdi.
The first volume is suitably opulent, with a veritable 'Who's who' of Monteverdi solo singers joined by two dozen chorus singers and a colourful group of instrumentalists under Robert King's lively baton. The repertoire for this opening volume presents a joyous Christmas sequence from the composer's great collection of 1640-41, Selva morale e spirituale, such as might have been heard at a Venetian Vespers, alongside a fine Mass. The spacious recordings are complemented by excellent booklet notes by Monteverdi expert Professor John Whenham.
Monteverdi's unique music is constantly inventive, immensely varied—and uniquely Venetian. A glorious new Hyperion project!

12. O beatae viae a 2
13. Laudate Dominum omnes gentes, SV 197
14. Letaniae della Beata Vergine a 6, SV 204
This second volume of Monteverdi’s sacred music focuses on works to be found in the 1650 publication Messa a quattro voci e salmi. Here we find a glorious Mass-setting (one of only three to have survived complete – the 1597 Mass is recorded on volume 1), and the composer’s well crafted response to the epic Litany of Loreto. The third work here with full choir is the five-part Exultent caeli, a suitably joyous little work published in 1629.
Distinguished soloists Carolyn Sampson, Rebecca Outram, Rogers Covey-Crump, Charles Daniels, James Gilchrist and Peter Harvey share out the remaining works: the duets Venite, siccientes, Ego dormio, Cantate Domino and O beatae viae, and the solo pieces Currite populi and Laudate Dominum (sung by Gilchrist and Harvey, respectively).

09. Cantate Domino a 6, SV 293
10. Ecce sacrum paratum a 1, SV 299
11. Gloria in excelsis Deo a 7, SV 258
Hot on the heels of their glorious recording of Handel’s Ode for St Cecilia, Robert King, Carolyn Sampson and James Gilchrist are here joined by a host of further soloists for this third volume of Monteverdi’s sacred music.
The programme opens with the ebullient second setting of the Dixit Dominus and ends with the seven-voice Gloria, surely one of Monteverdi’s most impressive sacred works and one which is thought to have been part of a ceremonial Mass written to mark to the end of the 1630 plague outbreak in Venice. In between these two pillars of the repertoire come nine motets and Psalms, including the famous Christe, adoramus whose long-breathed phrases become the perfect vehicle to show off the intense range of colours Robert King so effortlessly draws out from his performers.

02. Salve Regina, SV 327 (1625)
03. Domine, ne in furore, SV 298

10. Magnificat II a 4, SV 282
11. Salve, o Regina, SV 326
12. Laudate Dominum omnes gentes III a 8, SV 274
It has been almost a year since the last release in this series, but from the very first bar of the Laetatus sum setting which opens this new volume the wait seems to have been worth it: over a swaggering bass ostinato Monteverdi weaves an exuberant array of melodies—with widely contrasted instruments and voices—to draw us once more into the world of Venetian extravagance.
The programme continues with a range of motets, the forces called upon varying from solo voice in the declamatory Salve Regina to multiple soloists and polychoral opulence in the Beatus vir setting.
