Cédric Tiberghien's 2014 release on Hyperion presents the technically challenging yet poetic piano works of Karol Szymanowski, and it is an excellent introduction to this composer's music in general. Tiberghien is a consummate performer, so his handling of the intricacies of Szymanowski's 4 Études, Op. 4, and the 12 Études, Op. 33, is virtuosic and impressive. Yet the delicate textures and rarefied moods of Szymanowski's keyboard music, which partake of the impressionistic tone painting and complex harmonies of Debussy and Scriabin, also require sensitivity and nuance. While the etudes are brief and aphoristic, and only give suggestions of Szymanowski's style, the longer Masques, Op. 34, and the three tone poems of Métopes, Op. 29, give a better idea of his handling of longer forms, and in them Tiberghien demonstrates his mastery of atmosphere and feeling for subtle shading. Hyperion's recording is clear and focused, though there is sufficient acoustic resonance to give Tiberghien's playing the proper depth and lushness.
