Death is Not the End's second collection of early highlife vibrations is another eye-opening experience, showing the evolution of a genre that didn't only dominate Nigeria and Ghana, but influenced Congo, Sierra Leone and central Africa. We've all heard highlife at this point, the plucky, guitar-led sound that fused jazz, African traditional sounds and nascent pop, but outside of West Africa, it's harder to visualize exactly where it came from. 'If You Want to Make a Lover: Pt II' continues Death is Not the End's story, shining a spotlight on not only the early sounds of the Fanti region in southern Ghana, where the music originated, but the two-fingered guitar-led Akan blues sound that Liberian sailors brought to Ghana. With dusty tracks from Kumasi Trio, Kojo Bio's Band, Adiin's Band, The Three Night Wizards, Fanti's Star Band and plenty of others, it provides us with a porthole into the evolution of a sound that has ricocheted back and forth across pop, rock and electronic music over the last few decades.
