“It looks like the South”, sang Nino Ferrer and this is the feeling that dominates when listening to this CANTO III by Matthieu Chazarenc.
A colorful jazz that originates in its native South-West to set a course for horizons even more tinged with sun and heat, spices and perfumes. We can successively guess the south of Spain, the Mediterranean, the Orient and even the Caribbean. CANTO III is like a snapshot of the feelings of this adopted Gascon and Parisian jazzman.
Twelve compositions which are as many songs without words in which Matthieu Chazarenc modestly gives us the fruit of his thoughts, hopes, doubts and emotions. Nostalgia (Rue Marcelle) rubs shoulders with revolt (Les Sauvages), the need for change (Cambio), the call of the open sea (Torre de Mar or Miharbi) to forget a past love (The Madonna) or escape one's sorrows (Deuxangs ).
And then, in the most exciting moments, the roots, always these essential, vital roots, the Land from which we come (Terra Madre) and the one where we will go to get drunk (Kamkwamba), without forgetting friendship. which is the cement of his life.
And speaking of friendship, the work of Matthieu Chazarenc is above all the fruit of his meeting with faithful traveling companions (Lagun – translation of “friend” in Basque): Christophe Wallemme on double bass, Sylvain Gontard on flugelhorn and Laurent Derache on the accordion. Alongside them, distinguished guests joined the journey for a piece and came to pose their voice or their instrument: Thomas Enhco (piano), Lydia Shelley (cello), Malou Oheix (voice) and Mohanad Aljaramani ( oud).
