Burner Courage’s self-titled debut is a sonic tapestry of subtle shifts. Like the Sea & Cake, nothing is expected, but every turn is satisfying—an example of the album’s recurring return to pleasurable paradox. Neal Wright’s creations are disarmingly earnest, yet at the same time playful, a testament to compositional tastefulness & his commitment to fresh creative choices. The fact that each song is chock full of instantly likeable hooks doesn’t hurt either. Wright’s tender, understated vocals blend seamlessly with bassist Amanda Spring’s dreamy harmonies. His warm-toned, explorative guitar settles over Spring’s upbeat, supportive bass—lush layers given movement by Lukas Schneider’s crisp, gently insistent, Spartan drums. The mood of the record lands squarely on intelligent optimism—a friendly album that both examines & uplifts. Recorded with Victor Nash at Destination: Universe! studios and mastered by Gus Elg at Sky Onion Mastering Studio, the record features a gorgeous letter-pressed jacket illustrated by Thomas LeDluz, printed by Aaron Robert Miller of Portland’s Egg Press.
