Though the surprise-hit FXX show Dave traced a semi-autobiographical comedic retelling of his music career, the last time Lil Dicky actually released a full-length LP was 2015’s Professional Rapper. Three seasons in, that drought ends with Penith, which also doubles as the show’s soundtrack.
With producer benny blanco on board and an assist from YG on “YG Interlude,” Dicky reminds listeners why he emerged as one of rap’s great satirists way back in the mid-2010s. On “Mr. McAdams,” Dave pays homage to his celebrity crush Rachel McAdams, who appears in an episode of the show and proceeds to steal his heart. On the track, the artist reveals the true intentions behind his rap career: “I ain't playing, why you think I've been rapping?/To be Mr. McAdams.”
