‘Nagrit’ is the fourteenth studio album by Valiant Swart, in a performing and recording career spanning 26 years. The entire body of work is presented in his mother tongue Afrikaans, an indigenous South African language, of which Swart is regarded as one of the very finest lyrical exponents. Musically steeped in blues based rock, country soul and folk, the album sees Swart returning to vintage form with his fantastic band. With soaring electric, acoustic and slide guitars, played by Valiant and Basson Laubscher, and Hammond organ, piano, Fender Rhodes and Wurlitzer by SA blues legend Simon Orange, as well as bass guitars and electric upright bass by the renowned Schalk Joubert, and drums and percussion by Valiant band stalwart Vernon Swart, Nagrit is sure to delight fans and newcomers alike. ‘Nagrit’ ('Night ride’ in English) denotes a collection of vignettes and meditations on the nightlife which permeates the lives of artists – working musicians in particular – all over the world.
