The Lively Ones cannot be ignored, if only because they stood at the origins of surf rock (like The Expressos) in 1960, along with Dick Dale & the Del-Tones. The band never hid their admiration for Dick Dale and the first three recordings on the 'Surf Rider' EP were Dick Dale cover versions! Moreover, the two original members of the group, Ed Chiaverini and Ray Hunt, met at a Dick Dale concert.
The Expressos' single "Teenage Express" (which gave them their name) was essentially a new surf arrangement of Preston Epp's "Bongo Rock," which Hunt, then the band's lead guitarist, taught Jim Fuller to play, who in turn very soon he used the main riffs of this composition to record The Surfaris' hit "Wipe Out" - one of the most famous surf rock songs in the world. The B-side of the same single, "Wanderin'", was soon re-recorded by Hunt's new band The Surfmen (whose members later became The Lively Ones and whose rare version of the song "Ghost Hop" remained unreleased until it was released on a compilation Del-Fi Records 'Wild Surf!)..
