Ahead-of-his-time Michal Turtle re-imagines/re-builds his cult 1983 debut of sexy, innovative grooves for Glasgow’s trustworthy Invisible, Inc. after some of its original gems resurfaced in recent years via Music From Memory, and were reworked by likes of Laurel Halo and Félicia Atkinson
Turtle’s debut album ‘Music From the Living’ (1983) is the epitome of sophisticated, svelte, experimental adult contemporary grooves, and understandably original copies trade for steep triple figures, if you can even find one. rather than straight up reissue the OG, 40 years later, ‘Same Songs, Different Rooms’ sees the British born, longtime Switzerland-based composer derive a subtly altered version of the LP from its original elements, using contemporary techniques and fresh vocal takes to breath new life into its sultry silhouettes and result a brand new record that fans new and old will fall in love with.
Initiating in the studio with a glimmering, trimmed overhaul of ‘Are You Psychic?’, replete with tongue-tip vocoder work and lip-smacking FM synth licks, he takes it out of the box with an extended take on ‘Phantoms of Dreamland’ recorded live at Cafe OTO, London, early 2020, benefitting from its new, live-processed vocal performance by Lucianne L. Lassalle, and FX from his spar Marc Hofweber aka Hove. On the B-side Turtle’s cool temperament and vision comes into play with a deliquescent reframing of ‘Village Voice’, and his vitality springs forth with a mercurial rework of ‘It’s a Stop Sign, Shirley!’, the blissfully dubbed-out ‘Yak by Yak’, and shuffling bossa hustle of ‘Jeka’.
