About his new record, Rob Williams says, “I wanted this one to be different from my previous records so I decided to go away from home to record it.” That decision landed him in Dallas, Texas with producer Salim Nourallah, whose credits include The Rhett Miller, Old 97’s, and The Damnwells.
This is the second solo release from Williams, a native of Richmond, Virginia, following 2013’s A Place in the Sun. His previous band, Joe Buck, Jr., released three albums over a sporadic 15 year period and is best known for their cover of Sparklehorse’s Someday I Will Treat You Good.
The new release was recorded at Nourallah’s Pleasantry Lane Studio and features performances by several notable Dallas musicians including John Dufilho (drums, guitar, keys), Jason Garner (drums, bass), Paul Slavens (keys, accordion), Rich Martin (keys), Camille Cortinas (backing vocals), and Joe Reyes (guitar). Nourallah contributes bass and backing vocals on several tracks. The album features driving acoustic roots rock like Footprints and Where You Hang Your Heart, as well as the sentimental favorite Henry and Maria which was influenced by the story of a young couples' engagement in 1929. “One of the things that I really liked about working with Salim was that he had an ear for matching the right people with the right songs,” Williams says. “Because of that, we ended up with two different drummers, two different bass players, two or three piano players, and so forth, but I don’t think that the record lacks consistency because of it. One of my goals for this project was to make a record over a fixed amount of time and resist the temptation to continuously go back and fix things in the studio. Salim made decisions quickly and we moved at a fast pace. What I love about this record is that even though we didn't spend months and months trying to make it perfect, it's rich with character. And it has a youthful energy,” he smiles, “unlike its author.”
