Indie singer/songwriter Joel Ansett’s debut album, ‘The Nature Of Us’, will be released soon, and the soft-spoken crooner with soul has created a fine introduction to his sort of gentle folk pop. Ansett mixes R&B grooves with traditional pop song structures to give audiences a lackadaisical breezy form of feel-good music. Ansett resides in Denver, and the Rocky Mountain skyline is a fitting backdrop for the brand of sweeping awe-inspiring music on the album. The production on the album is superb, and the producers, Brandon Weaver and Chase Weber, deserve kudos for creating a natural and serene acoustic palette for Ansett’s music to thrive in. Ansett’s music is an amalgamation of Jack Johnson’s laidback vocal delivery, Jason Mraz’s heartfelt lyrics and James Taylor’s ability to create songs able to resonate with a broad spectrum of listeners. Ansett has a gorgeous voice very similar to a Chris Martin except maybe a bit silkier. While strumming his guitar and reflecting on life’s travails, the music on the record basks in a tentative form of optimism. At times the music channels a lightweight neo-soul type of R&B funk, and at other times the music is downright John Denver tranquil. All the tracks on the album are more or less folk pop though, and Ansett’s vocals on the songs always touch the right spot in your stomach to simulate that warm feel of hot cocoa on a winter’s night. Songs on the record which stand out are ‘Kings and Queens’, ‘In The Eye’ and the catchy lead single, ‘Already In Love’. Joel Ansett’s ‘The Nature Of Us’ will be available come Nov. 25, and definitely is worthy of a spot on your playlist.
