Discrepant/Sucata boss Gonçalo F. Cardoso navigates to the Tenerife of the future on 'Loros Locos', fading expertly-captured field recordings into effervescent, new age synths, concrète soundscapes, eccentric muzak and flickering beats. Upgrading his moniker from Hannibal Chew III to IV, Cardoso doesn't deviate too much from the form he showed on last year's ace 'El Borneo De Dios (Sinfonías Resgatadas En La Isla De Borneo)' on this branching, erratic blend of sounds and ideas. He imagines the Tenerife of 2054, where parrots spread a virus that's only deadly to humans, forcing the island into a permanent quarantine. Eventually the animals take over the island, outnumbering the tiny, isolated human communities while the virus spreads across the globe, bringing humanity to its knees. Not a completely outlandish concept, then, and the music is surprisingly jaunty, given the theme. Cardoso imagines this new world as an apprehensive paradise, and engineers a fittingly bizarre soundtrack; if Lynch made groggy islet exotica, then it'd probably sound like this. Chirping birdsong is cut with simmering, downtempo beats and fourth world soundscapes trapped in caves of bubbling seawater. Cardoso expertly draws his narrative in widescreen, hooking us with familiar echoes and deviating sharply off-path whenever we get too comfortable. Shimmering vibraphones lead into burned-out, chopped 'n screwed dub, and chirpy kalimba funk is soon dissolved by distant death drums and buzzing insects. The album is most chilling when its sci-fi concept marries with our own reality in a labyrinth of blunted muzak and half-heard voices that sound as if they're sinking slowly to the bottom of the ocean. Who said dystopia couldn't be hilarious?
