DOUBLE LUCKY BLUES is a clear winner. The first time I listened to these new performances by Bill Reid and his very polished Fewer Sorrows Band, I was driving down the highway. What a rich road experience! The standards have an original taste and the original songs, most by Texas writers, seem standard . . . classic. I'm a fan of Ray Wylie Hubbard's venerable "Snake Farm," but Bill's version brought fresh energy to the song, a style that makes it original to him and the Band. "Never Get to Memphis," by Alex Harvey (a Nashville writer who's moving back to Fredericksburg in a month or two), is a new take on the Elvis story. "Coffee and Old Men," by Austin Ladd Roberts, evokes tears and memories. Recorded by an outstanding engineer at the oldest continuously operating studio in Nashville, and mastered by music's very best in Austin, this record brought new favorites to these ears.

Bill's unique voice comes out of years of history and experience, from opening for headliners in the 1960s to playing juke joints on famous blues Highway 61 in the 21st Century. The Texas Heritage Music Foundation is proud to showcase him each September at our Jimmie Rodgers festival on the Schreiner University campus.
