The career of the Dutch composer Rudolf Escher, delayed by World War II, began with the premiere of his orchestral work Musique pour l'esprit en deuil in 1947. He wrote chamber music for numerous contemporary musicians, and his orchestral works were regularly performed by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra during his lifetime. Critics compared his music to Ravel and Debussy, and he himself saw himself in the tradition of Gregorian and late medieval polyphony, of Sweelinck and Mahler. The present recordings were made at the last two editions of the unfortunately discontinued Orlando Festival in the province of Limburg in 2021 and 2022.
