2084. While Earth still dreams of unfulfilled, ruddy-hued destinies on Mars, it's the moon that boasts the furthest outpost of all humanity: a corporate megacity known as The Dive. It's a world of industry and secrets and one of the last bastions of capitalism, where money can buy just about anything, and where countless people go to disappear or start over.
Many also say the moon is closer to the dead.
Welcome to the world of Color of a Mirror, a dark science-fiction novel (and wider universe) by Daniel Adams-Dufresne. On this page, you've found volume one of the soundscape for this near-future setting, by award-winning composer Josh McCausland.
Building a soundtrack for a book may seem unusual, but this book has always been a little out-of-the-ordinary. There's no galaxy-spanning conflict, no impending doom of the human race... it's a story about very human characters, tackling themes of mental health and the lies we tell ourselves. Funding on Kickstarter and releasing independently of any label or publisher has allowed Daniel to push outside the realm of what's traditional, creating a universe that spans beyond the prose to elements of design and sound.
Music plays a critical role in the plot of the book (and was a constant presence during the years-long process of writing) so being able to pair the cerebral themes of the book with the dark tones of Josh McCausland's introspective, ambient compositions is a dream match.
Tracks 1-12 form the core of the soundtrack, hitting the major beats of the plot.
'body.exe' is particularly constructed as a reading track (though can easily stand on its own for day-to-day mood setting) with continuous progression through multiple motifs across twenty-two minutes of music. This is like the roots of this subterranean city on the moon, weaving in and out of moments seamlessly. As such, this track and "closing_credits_v1.zip" are both offered with no minimum purchase price, so anyone who purchases the book (or comes to the soundtrack first) can get a taste of this wider, dark science fiction universe at no extra cost.
Thank you for listening.
