Known for their energetic live shows, We Are the Ocean are a British rock band influenced by the post-hardcore sounds of Refused, Hot Water Music, and Rise Against. Formed in 2007 from the remnants of another band, Dead But Still Dreaming, the original lineup consisted of vocalist Dan Brown, guitarists Liam Cromby and Alfie Scully, bassist Jack Spence, and drummer Tom Whittaker. After changing their name, they utilized social networking sites to build up a loyal following, which resulted in a nomination for Best British Newcomer at the Kerrang Awards before they had even put out a record. In 2008, they released their self-titled debut EP and began touring various festivals including New Jersey's The Bamboozle and Donington Park's Download, before traveling to Baltimore to work with producer Brian McTernan (Thrice) on their debut album, Cutting Our Teeth. Following support slots with You Me at Six, Funeral for a Friend, and Lostprophets, it was released in 2010 through Hassle Records, with their second album scheduled for 2011. Go Now and Live was released in 2011 and was produced by Pete Miles (the King Blues, Canterbury). Sessions for their third record were interrupted by the departure of vocalist Dan Brown, leaving guitarist Liam Cromby with sole vocal duties on 2012's Maybe Today, Maybe Tomorrow. After a year of heavy touring, the group took a brief hiatus reconvening in 2014 with long-time producer Pete Miles to record their exploratory, riff-heavy fourth LP Ark, which arrived in early 2015.
