Jezz Woodroffe - Wonders Of The Underwater World (Soundtrack From The Film) (2023)

Jezz Woodroffe - Wonders Of The Underwater World (Soundtrack From The Film) (2023)

BAND/ARTIST: Jezz Woodroffe

Best known for his tenure in Black Sabbath, keyboardist Jezz Woodroffe concocted the progged-out soundtrack to 'Wonders of the Underwater World' in 1981, using a jaw-dropping arsenal of legendary analog and digital gear.

Woodroffe originally released 'Wonders...' as a private-press LP, but as per Trunk has done gear nerds a solid by sprucing it up for this reissue, and it's well worth a gander. Split into four long tracks, the soundtrack imagines the mysteries of the world beneath the waves using a shocking selection of instruments, including the legendary Yamaha CS80 (the synth Vangelis used to make the 'Blade Runner' soundtrack), the Roland SH-1 and PRO-MARS, and the Mini Moog and Moog Prodigy.

Taking his cues from Tangerine Dream and Jean Michel Jarre, Woodroffe makes the sub-aquatic realm sound cosmic and fantastical, filling his sprawling compositions with electrifying baroque fanfares and dizzy, textured analog whirls. There's nothing particularly revelatory here, especially if you've been keeping up with the reissue industrial complex, but Woodroffe's vision is peculiarly British, and will appeal to anyone who's exhausted their supply of BBC Radiophonic Workshop recordings.
