April Verch is now rightfully recognized as one of the most talented folk and bluegrass fiddle players around, and she's also a skilled singer and songwriter. All those talents are on display on The Newpart, her 10th album. It was produced by Casey Driessen at Sound Temple Studios in Asheville, NC, last October, with Verch accompanied by multi-instrumentalists Cody Walters and Hayes Griffin. Four original tunes fit snugly alongside well-chosen traditional fiddle numbers and songs from the likes of John Hartford ("Bring Your Clothes Back Home"), resulting in a pleasing diversity of material. Verch is also a virtuoso stepdancer, and that is showcased on her first solo footwork piece, "Gilchrist".
