This recording was made in the late 90's at Svetlanov's insistence. Scriabin was the composer with whom the master had the deepest sympathy and affection, and all of Svetlanov's passion is devoted here. Based on Scriabin's mystique and sensuality, the glossy, colorful, and profound ensemble creates an unmistakable romanticism rooted in the Russian climate, overwhelming the listener as if a great wave were crashing against them in a multilayered wave!
Svetlanov had recorded Scriabin melodically before this session recording from 1963 to the 1970s, and his sharp performances were originally highly acclaimed. This 1996 recording was originally made in Russia by Canyon Classics (who also recorded Fedoseev's Shostakovich at the same time), including "Dreaming," and was reportedly made at Svetlanov's own request. However, for some reason, it was never released during Svetlanov's lifetime, and after his death in May 2002, it was released in July of the same year as a memorial disc by EXTON label, which was reissuing many Canyon Classics recordings at the time.
The length of each piece is longer than that of the Melodia period, which makes the performances larger in scale. The Russian National Symphony Orchestra of this period possessed explosive power and expressive power to the point of density, and the recordings were made under the best conditions. It is also remarkable that Svetlanov, who considers Scriabin to be a composer rooted in the Russian tradition, uses innovative techniques and a variety of expressions to portray each piece. To date, there has been no complete collection of this quality and mighty performance, and few listeners would disagree that this disc is the definitive one.
