CPE Bach is an acquired taste for many people. However, once you get used to the syncopated rythmns, the abrupt stops and starts, changes in tempo and other surprising elements of Emanuel Bach's style, it is easy to get hooked.
These recordings are from compositions from Bach's Berlin period. The young, brash and fiery Bach comes out in many of the fast movements, particularly the first movement of the cello concerto. Reminiscent of the flute variant of this concerto, there is alot of passion in such music more typical of the north German school at the time and not so similar to the stil galant that reigned over much of europe.
The three sinfonias are especially welcome recordings, as the last time I saw them in print was back in the late 1980's as part of the 200 anniversay of Emanuel Bach's death in 1788. The second symphony in the set, the e minor sinfonia sounds quite similar to Haydn's sturm and drang symphonies from the same period.
CPE Bach's music reminds you that the enlightenment was not only an age of reason, but one of passion and a search for understanding the human psyche. Bach's music represents an important aspect of enlightenment thinking and art and I'm glad to see this music available to the public.
