Multi-disciplinary musician and composer Anjna Swaminathan (they/them)'s debut album, Rivers Above, Floods Below, is a lush and loving song cycle that nourishes and offers care to people who courageously flood the streets in protest. For oppressed people, resistance is second nature and rebellion is crucial to survival. It is terrifying, marginalizing, and isolating, while also being a testament to the power of collective listening, organizing, and rising.
White supremacy, capitalism, casteism, hetero-patriarchy, ableism, and all other systems of oppression scorch the earth and leave humanity parched. In the barren aftermath of unending harm, love, community, justice, art, radical truth, and togetherness are what quenches our thirst.
This album is a song cycle of prayers, anthems, and lullabies for those who spend their days calling for and building a reality that only our ancestors can remember. It is a call for hope, for rest, and for deeper listening. These compositions were written and developed throughout 2020 and archive Swaminathan's heart and headspace as they came to terms with their own many oppressions, their need for community, and the utter fatigue of fighting every single day. Since Anjna found themself hoping for realities that ultimately didn't come to fruition in the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic, each composition is accompanied by a description frozen in time and unedited in order to archive their hopes, dreams, fears, and questions while writing each poem and composition. Listeners are encouraged to read the writings and witness any visuals that accompany each piece.
Recorded during an audience-less concert at Roulette Intermedium on November 16, 2020, Rivers Above, Floods Below is free, honest, raw, and cathartic. The seamless album features Swaminathan improvising and healing alongside their closest friends and musical co-conspirators: Jasmine Wilson, Layale Chaker, Stephan Crump, and Joey Chang. To listen to it is to witness a collective ritual of acknowledging grief, seeking care, and releasing pain. Open your hearts as you immerse yourselves in this music. Allow emotions to rise and fall. Breathe. You are safe here.
